Revd Jonny Watson is ordained presbyter
Congratulations to Revd Jonny Watson who has been ordained presbyter for the curacy of Ballyholme, St Columbanus. Bishop David ordained Jonny along with five others at a service in Down Cathedral on Sunday 15 June 2025. The preacher was Revd Paul Harcourt, Vicar of All Saints' Woodford Wells in Essex.
Jonny reflects on his deacon year
Being ordained as a priest in Down Cathedral carries profound personal and spiritual significance. Just a short distance from this ancient site of worship, I began my career as a social worker in Downpatrick a quarter of a century ago. From my office window, I would look across to Cathedral Hill, never imagining that my journey, driven by my desire to walk alongside others in pain, would lead to this day. What started as a call to support those facing challenges has grown into a ministerial vocation. While roles may change, the essence remains: to be present, listen with compassion, and uplift others through God's strength, facilitating transformative encounters with Christ.
My diaconate year in Knockbreda, under Canon Bill Press's guidance, was an enriching time of formation within a parish that valued expository preaching, compassionate outreach, and intentional pastoral care. Living and ministering within earshot of Knockbreda’s church bells served as a constant reminder of the Church's call to be present amongst those with whom we live. Just as Christ took on flesh and lived among us, the Church is called to embody His presence in local communities. Incarnational ministry demands a faithful presence that mirrors Jesus' ministry, as He lived and walked among people to bring the light of the Kingdom and salvation.
As I prepare to be a curate in Ballyholme, I do so with a deep sense of gratitude and hope. This step signifies not just a new assignment but another phase in the journey of Peregrinatio or wandering for the love of God. Please pray for God's grace to be upon the Ballyholme congregation, my family, and me as we collectively adapt to new rhythms of life, mission, and service.
