Congratulations to Revd Dave Thomas who has been ordained presbyter for the curacy of Bloomfield, St Donard’s. Bishop David ordained Dave along with five others at a service in Down Cathedral on Sunday 15 June 2025. The preacher was Revd Paul Harcourt, Vicar of All Saints' Woodford Wells in Essex.
Dave reflects on his deacon year
It has been a great privilege to serve as deacon at Mount Merrion Church alongside the Rector, Revd Lucy Burden. I have learnt so much from Lucy and appreciated her wisdom, encouragement and prayerful support.
I’ve also learnt a huge amount from each of the members of Mount Merrion. I’ve been so inspired and challenged by the love that people have for Jesus and their steadfast faith in God’s goodness through all the ups and downs of life. It’s been an honour to hear people’s stories and to pray with them in the midst of their joys, their challenges and their sorrows.
I’ve loved leading the Monday night Bible Study and being part of a wonderful group of people who have encouraged me, made me laugh, impressed me with their faith, tolerated my guitar-playing, taught me how to make the perfect flask of tea and welcomed me as a brother in Christ from the first day I arrived. It’s also been such an encouragement and blessing to see people come to faith in recent months through Alpha courses and I know that God has great things in store for Mount Merrion.
I’ve been blessed to be part of the church family and I have received far more than I’ve been able to give. As sad as I will be to leave, I’m so excited to begin working full-time as curate in St Donard’s. God has been faithful in every step of the journey, and I know this next stage will also be a time of growth for me and my family as God continues to shape us and use us as we seek to be available for whatever he wants to do in and through us.
