Five Diocesan Evangelists are commissioned

Congratulations to the five new Diocesan Evangelists who were commissioned by Bishop David last night (11 June) at a joyful service in Knocknagoney Parish Church.

Friends and supporters came from across the diocese to affirm the evangelists, who will serve in their home parishes and church plants.

Pictured above with Bishop David and the Warden of Evangelists, Capt. George Newell CA are, left to right, Tom Field (Willowfield) Gill Peek (Movilla Abbey Church), Andrew Williamson (Shankill Lurgan), Keith Porter (Braniel Community Church) and Cyril Morrison (Knocknagoney).

In his address George commended Tom, Gill, Keith, Cyril and Andy for completing the two-year course. He affirmed God’s call on their lives and reminded them that evangelists are “proclaimers of truth” in a world, and sometimes even a Church, that may resist hearing it.

Drawing on 1 Peter 3, George urged them to be “always prepared to give an answer… for the hope that you have,” but to do so “with gentleness and respect.” He acknowledged that speaking the truth of the Gospel can be difficult and costly yet also brings blessing.

Psalm 71 provided the heart of the charge to the evangelists being commissioned.

“The psalmist proclaims the goodness of God, the miraculous nature of God, his righteousness. Such is his thankful, trust and reliance in God he must pass that message on,” said George. “That is your charge tonight.”

In closing, George encouraged the new evangelists to use their distinct gifts, stay close to Jesus, and “keep the message alive” with courage, humility and faithfulness.

Please pray for Tom, Gill, Keith, Cyril and Andy as they begin their commissioned ministry.
