A Shared Christmas Message of Hope and Peace

Archbishop John McDowell and Archbishop Eamon Martin have recorded a joint message that will be broadcast on RTÉ on Christmas Day, offering a shared reflection on hope, peace and life on the island of Ireland.

In a warm and personal video conversation – published online in advance today – both archbishops speak candidly about the realities of pastoral life, the joy and fatigue of Christmas celebrations, and the deep significance of this season for families, communities and those far from home.

Reflecting on recent encounters with migrant families, they acknowledge how difficult this time of year can be for those who are separated from loved ones, while also recognising the remarkable resilience and hope shown by parents striving to create a sense of home for their children.

The conversation also looks back on the past year, marked by the Jubilee Year of Hope in the Catholic Church, and forward to the hopes they share for 2026. While acknowledging the fractures and divisions often highlighted in the media, both archbishops stress that much of life is still shaped by what people hold in common: family, work, faith, community, and the desire to contribute to a better future.

At the heart of their message is a call not to allow despair to overshadow the quiet goodness of everyday life, and a reminder that peace is built through small, faithful acts of care and responsibility.

The message concludes with a shared prayer for peace, reconciliation and healing, particularly for those who are less fortunate, and an invitation to rediscover the joy, hope and consolation that the Christ Child brings to the world.

The conversation is now available to view on the Church of Ireland website and the Church of Ireland’s social media channels. CLICK HERE to view the video on YouTube.

The Christmas Day message will be broadcast on RTÉ One television at 12.10pm and on RTÉ Radio 1 on 1.05pm, and will be available afterwards on the RTÉ Player: www.rte.ie/player
