Down and Dromore MU highlight gender–based violence

Mothers’ Union in Down and Dromore held their diocesan observance of 16 Days Against Gender–Based Violence on Saturday 26 November in St Finnians, Cregagh.

Members of the Faith & Policy unit gave an update on changes in the law in NI following on from last year’s event in St Mark’s Dundela when the Minister of Justice gave the address.

Using the story of the Good Samaritan as a focus, the gathering was reminded that using whatever we have at our disposal, we can all contribute to the elimination of gender–based violence from our communities.

Members were asked to take home a ‘Safe Church’ flyer from Onus and to encourage their own parishes to become a ‘Safe Church’.

Safe Church

Established in 2007 as a Social Enterprise, Onus offers specialist training and consultancy services on domestic violence and abuse.

Onus developed the Safe Church Initiative to empower churches to recognise and respond to Domestic Violence and Abuse both within the church and wider community context. As a Cinnamon Recognised Project, Safe Church offers churches a best practice, tested methodology for helping people in their community. This helps local church–based projects to both start faster and succeed sooner.
