Advent begins

Sunday 27 November is Advent Sunday and the start of the new Church Year. The season is one of expectation, preparation, and watchfulness as the Church prepares to celebrate the coming (adventus) of Christ in his incarnation, and also looks ahead to his final advent as judge at the end of time.

In the northern hemisphere, the Advent season falls at the darkest time of the year, and the natural symbols of darkness and light are powerfully at work throughout Advent and Christmas.

Many of our parishes will light an Advent wreath each Sunday between now and Christmas. It traditionally holds four candles and an optional fifth.

The first candle symbolises hope, the second, faith, the third, joy and the fourth, peace. The final candle represents light and purity and is called the “Christ candle.” It is placed in the middle and lit on Christmas Day.

Please do join us for worship through Advent and Christmas. You can find a church on our website HERE and through Facebook.
