Apply to train as a Diocesan Reader

We are greatly encouraged by the numbers of new Diocesan Readers who have been commissioned for Down and Dromore but more people of all ages are needed to fulfil this ministry role.

The Role

Lay Readers have a significant voluntary role in assisting the ministry of the church. They are authorised by the Bishop to preach, teach, lead worship and engage in pastoral work, not just in their own parish but in other churches throughout the diocese.

As the role of a Reader in teaching and leading is significant, potential Readers are given training in Biblical studies, theology, ministry and preaching over a two year period before they are commissioned.

The Course

Applications are now open for the 2020–22 course. The total cost is £1,500. The diocese pays one third of the amount with the remaining two–thirds shared by agreement between the sending parish and the candidate. This sum can be paid in instalments.

Financial help for younger adults

If an applicant is 25 years and under, we can offer the course at a reduction of up to £400. This is also a new and shorter course and an ideal time to encourage younger adults to apply.

Download the course brochure here and please speak to your rector if you are considering applying.

CLOSING DATE FOR APPLICATIONS: Friday 30 October at 5.00 pm.
