Second birthday celebrations in The Glen

Congratulations to our church plant in The Glen, Newtownards, which has been celebrating its 2nd birthday with a programme of events for the community.

The festivities began on Wednesday 24 August, 2 years to the day, with a birthday party for the kids and a Praise Evening when Tammy, a young mum, was baptised. Tammy’s three children will also be baptised at the Glen Community Church celebration on Sunday.

This week the church has also hosted an Afternoon Tea for the seniors, a Pamper Morning for young mums, with a Social Evening and Treasure Hunt to come.

The regular church family is now 70–80 strong, having begun in 2014 with just 22 at the very first meeting.

“We planted a tree that day,” recalls Stephen Doherty, Leader of the Glen Community Church, “but about 2 weeks later they broke it down. Chris Matchett and I talked about replanting another one but decided against it. It was the right decision because the original is now growing away.

“It’s a great wee illustration that no matter what is thrown against us, we’re here. The roots are deep. It’s been a difficult journey to our second birthday but we’ve got here. God has been good!”

Revd Chris Matchett is rector of St Mark’s Newtownards which planted the church.
