Tributes to Michael Davey

Michael Davey, who died on 30 June 2016, was a member of Down and Dromore Diocesan Council from 1986–2016 and of General Synod from 1981–2014. He also served on the Board of St Anne’s Cathedral.

Paying tribute, Bishop Harold said:

It was with great sadness that I learnt today of the death of Michael Davey, who was greatly beloved in the Diocese of Down and Dromore, and indeed throughout the Church of Ireland.
Michael served the Church in so many ways, but particularly through the gift of his legal mind. Not only was he assessor for the General Synod for longer than I can remember, but he also served in many of the Councils and Committees in Down and Dromore. He was both independent–minded and fair–minded, and had the particular ability to change a situation for good with just a few well–chosen words of wit and wisdom. He served God with humility, was quietly and faithfully to be found at the Lord’s Table early on a Sunday morning in St Columba’s Knock, and has entered into the closer presence of his Saviour. Michael will be greatly missed, and his unique fingerprint cannot be replaced. Thank God for him. Please hold his widow Monica, and their family in your prayers.

Dean John Mann said:

“Michael Davey is a man that I have known and admired for many years, in fact, since I was curate–assistant in St Columba’s Knock in the early 1980s. On coming to St Anne’s I found to my delight that Michael was a member of the Cathedral Board. His carefully weighed words and wise advice have been extremely valuable, and on at least one occasion he and I teased out a difficult problem together under his steady guidance. It is poignant that Michael should die on this day, as someone mentioned to me earlier, since his uncle William fell on the first day of the Somme and, without a grave, is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. Prayerfully, we will remember him and his family and friends at the cathedral services, today, and in the coming days.”

The funeral will be at 2.00 pm on Tuesday 5 July in St Columba’s, Knock.
