Somme Centenary Pilgrimage enters final day

The Archbishops of Armagh have embarked on the final day of their Somme Centenary Pilgrimage when they will visit Ypres Salient battlefields and cemeteries.

The Most Revd Dr Richard Clarke and the Most Revd Eamon Martin, along with young pilgrims from across the island of Ireland will pray and reflect at the Peace Pledge in the centre of the Peace Park and visit the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917.

Yesterday the party visited sites of significance to the Battle of the Somme including graveyards and memorials linked to the 36th Ulster Division and 16th Irish Division including Thiepval Wood and Guillemont.

The group also visited the Ulster Tower where Archbishop Clarke is pictured (below) reading a Wilfred Owen poem, and later travelled to Ypres for the Menin Gate Last Post ceremony and wreath laying.
