Turning the clocks back – to January!

Back in January, Bangor Abbey was in the news as the clock faces on the famous tower were removed for refurbishment after being in situ for approximately 180 years.

We thought you’d like to know that they’re safely back, in more than enough time for this weekend’s Columbanus 1400 Festival

The timepiece was the gift of the Ward family in 1829 and was inspired by the clock at St Mark’s Newtownards. It has been restored using original parts with the addition of auto wind and auto adjustment for the seasonal change.

The clock strikes the hour but there were so many complaints about the noise that a silencer had to be fitted!

The refurbishment was made possible because of a generous donation from Dean Brian Moller in memory of his wife Kay, plus donations from others and fundraising events. The clock was dedicated on Sunday 3 May.
