Revd Dr Chris Wright gives mission challenge at Magheralin Conference

Magheralin Parish recently hosted a weekend with the Revd Dr Chris Wright on the theme of ‘The Mission of God’s People’.

Stephen Trew writes:

Chris Wright is the International Ministries Director of Langham Partnership, a ministry founded by John Stott in Langham Place London. Langham Partnership has the vision of seeing churches in the Majority World equipped for mission and growing to maturity in Christ through the ministry of pastors and leaders who believe, teach and live by the Word of God.

Chris is an outstanding author and expert in the Old Testament. I was half expecting a dry academic but I could not have been more wrong. He is a gifted speaker and presented with clarity and passion. I have got to say I was impressed.

On Friday evening he used the prayer of Solomon in 1 Kings 8 to challenge everyone to identify with those outside the church and to live with “hearts fully committed to the Lord our God, to live by his decrees and obey his commands”. This echoed Bishop Harold’s message for Mission 2015 that the diocese needs to turn around and minister to people outside the church.

On Saturday Chris turned to the New Testament to explain Integral Mission. He outlined how five marks of mission: evangelism, teaching, compassion, justice, and care for creation must be fused together under the Lordship of Christ. He likened this to a wheel which needs its hub, spokes and rim. Take any part of this away– and we’re going nowhere. “Integral mission” needs all these elements! It was a powerful challenge.

Gareth Harron, the Rector of Magheralin Parish, commented, “In reminding us of the biblical mandate to mission this weekend, Chris brought us plenty of challenges! To hear such clear Bible teaching about moving outwards in mission in 2015 was perfect timing and a real encouragement. We’re looking forward to an exciting year.”

If you get an opportunity to hear Chris Wright speak do not miss it. His preaching is excellent.
