New book published to help combat low clergy morale
A new book to help clergy improve and maintain their morale has been published as part of the Grove Leadership Series.
Don’t Lose Heart was written by CPAS director of ministry Graham Archer in response to the findings of research into clergy morale commissioned by CPAS in 2013. The research revealed that 31% of clergy would describe their present morale as ‘very low’ to ‘average’. Over 350 Anglican clergy were surveyed, across more than 30 dioceses.
In the book, Archer explores the theme of morale both in 2 Corinthians and in the experience of 21st century church leaders. He identifies five key factors which can boost morale: spending time with God, setting appropriate boundaries, having supportive relationships, knowing your priorities and seeing the fruit of your work.
This is the 16th title in the Grove Leadership Series, which is a partnership between Grove Books and CPAS. The series aims to offer fresh thinking and ideas on key leadership topics which is biblical, thoughtful and practical.
Graham Archer joined CPAS in 2012, following 30 years’ experience in church leadership. He said: ‘Maintaining good morale can be a particular challenge for Christian leaders. As ministers, we not only face unique challenges, but also live and work in a context where things like support networks and work–life balance can look very different to the norm.
‘The impact of good morale goes far beyond the church leader themselves. Leaders who are positive, motivated and good in heart will not only be far more effective in leading mission and ministry in their churches and communities, but are also more likely to continue in church leadership for the long haul.
