Bishop Harold addresses annual National Police Memorial Day Service

Bishop Harold Miller gave the address at the annual National Police Memorial Day service in Belfast on 28 September 2014.

The cross–community service honoured the thousands of police officers who have been killed in the line of duty.

HRH The Prince of Wales, patron of the charity, was among those in attendance at the Waterfront Hall.

He was joined by Home Secretary Theresa May, more than 40 Chief Constables and around 2,000 former colleagues and family members of serving police officers who lost their lives while carrying out their duties.

The Prince of Wales has paid tribute to the bravery of police officers who have died in the line of duty in Northern Ireland.

HRH noted the “enormous sacrifices” made by officers as he attended the National Police Memorial Day event in Belfast.

A total of 303 officers died there in the line of duty between 1966 and 1998.

For everyone who was there, it was a chance to reflect on the past, amid the hope of a better future. In his closing words Bishop Harold urged those present to ‘remember forward’, saying that what endures as we do so are ‘faith, hope and love, and the greatest of these is love.’
