A bit about us:
Designed by the architect John Lynn, St. John's church was opened for worship in 1832 but was not sufficiently endowed to be consecrated until 1853. It has been discribed by the Ulster Architectuial Heritage Society as "a pleasantly situated handsome granite church set on the slopes of Slieve Donard and overlooking Lecale." Mayer of Munich was responsible for the three light window in the chancel in 1878 and further stained glass was installed by the Tower Glass Studio of Dublin in 1917. Newcastle remained a chapel-of-ease for the Plebania of Kilkeel until 1884, although it was dedicated a parochial district within the parish of Kilcoo in 1868. The choir robing room was built in 1970 and a peal of 6 bells installed in 1980. The Parish remains within the private patronage of the Annesley family.St Colman's was built in 1927 and is used as a cemetery chapel, although regular services are held and attended by the clergy of the parent parish.
St. John's is a medium-sized parish with a warm congregation. Newcomers are made most welcome and there are plenty of oppertunities for involvement in parish life. Worship patterns cater for both traditional and modern outlooks.
The Future:
Over the next five years we hope to build on our strengths, especially in terms of increasing our co-operation with the other churches in Newcastle.
The new parish hall has recently been completed and we look forward to using these new facilities in new initiatives aimed at building up our parish life.
