It is with sadness that we report the death of Revd Cecil Kerr on 26th August after 10 years of ill health. Our prayers and sympathies are with Myrtle and the family. Bishop Harold pays tribute:
"Cecil Kerr was a wonderful man of God. His ministry was valued and known throughout the world, but focused particularly here in Ireland through the work of the Christian Renewal Centre in Rostrevor. His reconciling ministry was a true gift of God throughout the difficult times of the Troubles in the North.
"Cecil held out a vision of the Kingdom of God which was a kingdom of unity, peace and power, providing a Gospel Contrast to the bitterness and division being experienced all around, and even between Christians.
"He is held in the hands of the Lord in whom he completely and implicitly trusted, and the results of his work are to be seen in many lives still today, in all the churches.
Our love, prayers and thoughts are with Myrtle and the family."
The funeral service will take place at 12 noon on Wednesday 1st September in Kilbroney Parish Church.
Cecil George Kerr 1936 - 2010
Cecil Kerr was ordained in the Church of Ireland in 1960 and served his curacy in St Patrick's, Coleraine, in the Diocese of Connor. He was Head of Religious Instruction in Annadale Grammar School from 1963-65 before becoming Chaplain of Queen's University. He also lectured in Biblical Studies and Pastoral Counselling at QUB from 1973-76.
Following an experience of personal renewal, Cecil and Myrtle were led to leave Queen’s and found the Christian Renewal Centre at Rostrevor in 1974.This was a huge step of faith from a secure and recognised post out into the unknown, but only the first in many courageous steps.
Against the backdrop of the 'Troubles' he and Myrtle pursued a vision for renewal and reconciliation, living in community with Protestants and Catholics to profound effect. As they faithfully led the community in work, worship and prayer many lives were profoundly touched in Ireland and around the world.
They retired to Warrenpoint in 2000, although for the last 10 years Cecil suffered declining health. He is survived by his wife Myrtle, daughter Ruth and sons David and Timothy.
Former rector of Clonallon and Warrenpoint, Revd
M.D. Julian McCready has died. He was curate in Seagoe between 1988 and
1991 and then incumbent
of Clonallon and Warrenpoint from 1991 to 1996 before moving to England. The funeral will take place at the Minster in Doncaster on 10th August at 12 noon.
